The Headset That Folds Into Your Bag: Why the HP Poly Focus 625 Fold Suits the Way We Work Now

Most business headsets are built for one place: your desk. The trouble is that hardly anyone works in one place any more. You take calls in the car park, on the train, in a hot-desk hub, at the kitchen table and, if you're unlucky, in an airport lounge at 6am. The HP Poly Focus 625 Fold is the first headset in Poly's premium Focus line designed to keep up with that, and it's the most practical headset in the Poly range for the way Australian businesses actually work.

What the "Fold" actually gets you

The Focus 625 comes in two versions. The standard model looks and wears like the Voyager Focus 2 it replaces, with a soft travel pouch. The Fold version adds hinges in the headband so the ear cups swing in flat, and it ships in a hard-shell case about the size of a paperback. That sounds like a small thing until you've spent a year fishing a bent headset out of the bottom of a laptop bag. The case protects the boom mic, the cushions stay clean, and the whole thing takes up less room than a lunchbox.

Everything else, from the audio to the battery to the Teams certification, is identical between the two, so you're only choosing the Fold for portability. If the headset is going to live on a charging stand at one desk, the standard 625 (or the bundle with the wireless charging stand) is the better pick. If it's coming home with you every night, get the Fold.

Noise cancelling that works both ways

This is where the Focus 6 series earns its price. The 625 uses hybrid active noise cancelling, with microphones inside and outside each ear cup, to cut the drone of open-plan air-con, traffic and train noise. It's the difference between a train carriage you can take a customer call in and one you can't. There's also a transparency mode for when you need to hear a colleague at the next desk without taking the headset off.

More important for a business headset is what the person on the other end hears. The 625 has four noise-cancelling microphones running Poly's Acoustic Fence 2.0, which draws a virtual bubble around your voice and drops anything outside it. Keyboard clatter, a colleague on another call or a barking dog at home simply don't make it down the line. The boom mic still rotates up to mute, which is the one control everybody understands.

Battery: charge it Monday, forget it

Poly quotes up to 25 hours of talk time with ANC and the busy-light on, stretching to 30 hours with them off, and 42 to 52 hours of listening time. In practice that's a full working week of meetings on one charge for most people. When it does run down, an hour on the USB-C cable fills it, or you can drop it on the optional wireless charging stand and let it top up overnight. The battery is also user-replaceable, which the Focus 2 never offered and which matters if you're buying twenty of these and expect them to last five years.

Connect to everything

The 625 remembers up to ten paired devices, so it moves between a Teams call on your laptop, via the included BT700 USB-C dongle, and calls on your mobile without re-pairing. Bluetooth range is quoted at up to 50 metres, which is enough to walk to the printer and back mid-call without a dropout. It's Microsoft Teams Open Office certified, works with Zoom, Google Meet and softphones, and the smart sensors answer a call when you put it on and pause music when you take it off. There's a USB-C to 3.5 mm cable in the box for the rare device that isn't Bluetooth, and a USB-C to USB-A adapter for older laptops.

Comfort and the small stuff

At around 210 grams it's light for a stereo ANC headset, and the on-ear cushions and padded headband are designed for all-day wear rather than a quick call. A tactile volume wheel on the ear cup beats fiddling with touch panels. SoundGuard Digital caps sudden loud noises to protect hearing, which is worth knowing if you're buying for a contact centre. The ear cushions and battery are replaceable, the packaging is plastic-free and the headset carries HP's standard two-year warranty.

Who it's for

The Focus 625 Fold suits anyone who splits their week between locations: sales reps, consultants, managers moving between sites, hybrid staff who alternate home and office, and anyone who travels for work. It's also a strong choice for open-plan offices where the noise cancelling does as much for your concentration as it does for your calls. If your team never leaves the desk, look at the standard 625 with the charging stand instead.
